Altos de Chavón

Altos de Chavón

This hidden jewel of La Romana is an impressive replica of a 16th-century European town, with its cobbled streets and coral stone and terracotta masonry. Altos de Chavón was built in 1976 in the precise style designed by Roberto Copa, a former designer for Paramount Studios, and Charles Bludhorn, a US industrialist. With its magnificent view over the Chavón River, the Ciudad de los Artistas (City of Artists) - as it is also known - has become a major cultural centre, the home to artists’ studios, exceptional craft workshops and influential art galleries, where students from all over the world compete for places on its intense study programme that encompasses ceramics, fashion, design, and other handicrafts. Its Design School is associated with the Parsons School of New York, where students complete their studies. In the town centre there is a Grecian-style amphitheatre, bars, restaurants, museums, and the Church of San Estanislao.

Every year, there are fishing tournaments like the Blue Marlin Classic, El Dorado, and El Bonito, which attract fishermen from all over the world.
